October is breast cancer awareness month, and local
organizations and businesses have embraced the cause, offering plenty of events
and educational opportunities.
From races to free screenings, the crusade against breast cancer is well
represented on the Eastern Shore.
For those affected by breast cancer, be it personally or via the diagnosis
of a friend or family member, sharing in these experiences offers a chance for camaraderie
and hope for the future. For those
who haven’t been personally affected, consider joining the cause and assisting
your local community in battling a disease that affects approximately 1 in 8 women. Besides skin cancer, it is the highest
diagnosed cancer in women, and aside from lung cancer, it has the highest
mortality rate. Below is a
comprehensive list of upcoming events to benefit breast cancer on the Eastern
Shore:
Saturday October 8th:
Ayers Creek Adventures Pink Paddle—a Benefit for Komen for
the Cure and Women Supporting Women

Put on your favorite pink attire and join us as for a calm
water paddle through the pristine salt marshes of Ayers Creek, observe the
abundant wildlife, while raising awareness and funds towards the fight against
breast cancer.

10th Annual Walk For Awareness/Breast Cancer: Lace up and
walk in the 10th annual Women Supporting Women Walk for Breast Cancer
Awareness. Saturday October 8th at
Winter Place Park in Salisbury. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and walkers
will hit the pavement at 10. It costs $20 to enter - and all the funds benefit
Women Supporting Women.

Friday, October 14:
AQUA Pools & Spas will host “Poolin’ for the Cure” to benefit Komen
Maryland. The event will be held on Friday October 14, 2011 from 6 p.m.-10 p.m.
at AQUA on Mistletoe Drive in Easton, MD.
The event will be catered by Mason’s of Easton and will feature a full open
bar, a live and silent auction, music by Kentavius Jones, a coffee bar by
Coffee for a Cause, and a fireside s’mores station.
In conjunction with the event AQUA is raffling a spa valued at $5000. Spa
raffle tickets are $5 each. Event tickets are $60 and include one spa raffle
ticket.
Saturday, October 15:
Easton Market Square is hosting the 2nd annual Oyster Fest
to benefit Komen Maryland from noon to 6 p.m., rain or shine under the tents in
Easton, MD. The event will include
fabulous food and beverages, live music, live auction, raffle and door
prizes. This year's event is in memory
of Tara Foxwell, an ardent supporter of breast cancer causes and an
instrumental part of last year's event.

Girls Night Out At the Eunice Q. Sorin Women’s Diagnostic
Center
Atlantic General Hospital 9733 Healthway Drive in Berlin, Md.
5 pm – 8 pm
Eunice Q. Sorin Women’s Diagnostic Center will hold a Girls
Night Out for area women. The event is free and offers life-saving breast
cancer prevention education, complimentary clinical breast exams and Achilles
bone scans as well as massages and refreshments. Guest speaker Rota Knott, a
local resident and breast cancer survivor, will share her story.
